A Message from NSA N. FL Chapter President Mary McCormack

How are your New Year's resolutions going? One of mine was to continually learn new and interesting things both personally and professionally. As a member of the Gem and Mineral Society, I signed up to take classes to learn silversmithing and advanced gem inlay processes. We all need to have a good balance between work and play. When I finished making amethyst rings for both my husband and me, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment and delight!

After each NSA-NF meeting I feel a similar feeling of accomplishment and delight. Having been a trainer and speaker for over thirty years, I truly value lifelong learning. Each time I attend one of our meetings, I experience "take home value" that I can apply to my business. The quality of our speakers is second to none. The networking between members is energizing and stimulating. The relationships that we aredeveloping in our chapter grow stronger with each event. How can we not be delighted? It simply does not get better than this!

Last meeting, Jim Ziegler taught us the strategies that he has used throughout his amazing career to be exceptional at work and with his marriage. What a great team he and his wife make. For our next meeting on April 9th at The University Club we will build on what we learned and move our businesses forward to our next level of success.

There are many facets to a successful speaking business. From social networking to productive marketing layered upon a foundation of strong platform skills, it is all important. You just have to decide where your business needs the most attention right now. Our chapter programming will offer insight into all aspects of managing your speaking business. If you want to experience lifelong learning and be very successful at your chosen field of professional speaking, NSA-North Florida is the chapter for you! VP for Education Linda Harvey is doing a fantastic job of lining up the best of the best for YOU! I can't wait to learn from Monica Wofford, CSP about her ideas for achieving "Authenticity from the Stage". Monica is well respected both as a member of NSA and the Central Florida chapter. Welcome Monica!

Just to keep you informed about what your wonderful executive board is doing to help our chapter grow, we will be meeting on March 27th for a half day strategic planning meeting. We will have great news to share with you on April 9th! We are developing committees that our members can participate in very soon. If you want to get more involved, think about joining our Hospitality Committee to help great guests, our speakers, and members. Volunteering helps you to develop relationships and friendships. This is your chapter. Our continued success depends on everyone helping a little bit. So think about your area of expertise and what you also enjoy. let me or any of your board members know of your interst to help. We welcome your ideas and your involvement!

What does YOUR convention look like?

Pretend for just a moment that you are on the convention team for 2009 in Phoenix. What do you need the most right now to succeed in your speaking business?

- See and experience top-of-the-line main stage talent?
- Exposure to ideas on speaking, marketing, and business across the board? (I call that sponge mode.)
- Gather with a group you have created around public seminars, storytelling or direct mail marketing?
- Connect with one or more PEGs (Professional Expert Groups) for targeted networking?
- Find the people who can help you refine and implement on something that is new to you?
- Schedule one-on-one time with colleagues to develop strategic partnerships or help you redefine your strategic positioning?
- Implement ideas while you are still at convention?
- Interact with others to flesh out the ideas you get and take them a step further?
- Swim in the pool and go for early morning walks?

Guess what…whatever your answer, that is just what we are doing in July at convention.

How can that be?

Because we have planned a convention for the DIY crowd…Design it Yourself!

- We are inviting you to leave a session if you can tell in the first few minutes that it is not just what you need. Have your second and third choice picked and know where they are to make a quick switch.
- We are labeling sessions as to topic (speaking, marketing, business and other) and as to level in that topic (basic, intermediate or advanced). And we are inviting presenters in intermediate and advanced sessions to politely refer basic questioners to another source.
- We are replacing the end-of-day content-heavy concurrent sessions on Monday and Tuesday with implementation, networking and processing time. This year, more than ever before, you can go home with things already done and collaborations created.

Being on the convention planning committee, as you now are, requires some work. Give some thought to just what you need now. Then look at what is on offer and plan to attend what you just can’t miss (stay tuned this will be announced soon!). Next, fill in the blanks with what will help you the most.

At the Orlando conference, I had three 45 minute sessions with people I respect who are knowledgeable about what I do and about my niche. While often I have been the giver in these one-on-ones, this time I was the receiver. It is a benefit of NSA that you can do either or both.

Local Chapter of National Speakers Association Forms
Organization offers Support to North Florida Speakers

(Jacksonville, Fla.) April 14, 2008: NSA of North Florida has filed to become an official chapter of the National Speakers Association. The group met to elect its board of directors and officers for 2008 – 2009. They are:

The local chapter is a revival for the group, which met until 2004. Membership in the organization, which will meet four times during the year, is open to people who receive compensation for speaking or speak frequently to audiences of 15 or more as a part of a salaried position. Suppliers to public speakers, speaker bureau owners and support staff to speakers also qualify for membership. The organization welcomes members from anywhere in North Florida and South Georgia. The other Florida NSA chapter is based in West Palm Beach.

“We have a great deal of talent – and variety - among professional speakers in this area,” said Dr. Jarik Conrad, NSA North Florida president. “Many of us have been informally sharing information and ideas for quite a while, but we wanted a forum to do it on a regular basis.” NSA North Florida represents an opportunity for full-time and part-time speakers to learn from each other and from experts from across the country that the organization will bring in as guest speakers. According to Conrad, “Members will also have the opportunity to network with people who understand and appreciate the joys and challenges in making a living as a speaker.”

Jarik – Officially called the first meeting of NSA North Florida to order at 9:00 AM. There are 9 founding members to date. Each founding member contributed $100.00. The Board will accept additional founding members through March 28, 2008.
Jarik discussed the history of the NSA North Florida Chapter formation. Initially formed 5 years ago but lack of attendance forced the chapter to dissolve. Now with renewed interest and founders contributing the new NSA N. FL Chapter has formed.

There will be a total of 4 meetings this year with one being a holiday event.

To become a member of NSA N.FL you must meet NSA qualifications.
